In Changing Our Approach To Anti-Tracking , Mozilla revealed plans to improve the privacy protection of Firefox users and the performance of the browser through the improved implementation of content blocking in the web browser. Firefox will protect users by blocking tracking by default and improve performance at the same time according to Mozilla. We reviewed the new content blocking options that Mozilla tests in Firefox Nightly currently already in July. The new feature, called Content Blocking in Nightly, integrates Firefox’s long standing feature Tracking Protection and other content blocking options, and makes these more accessible in the browser. Mozilla launched Tracking Protection in 2014 in Firefox Nightly but enabled it for Private Browsing only in Firefox 42 . Mozilla today announced that its Firefox browser will soon automatically block all attempts at cross-site tracking by default. There’s three parts to this strategy. Starting with version 63, which is currently in testing in the browser’s nightly release channel, Firefox will block all slow-loading trackers (with ads being the biggest offender here). Those are trackers that take more than five seconds to load. Starting with Firefox 65, the browser will also strip all cookies and block all storage access from third-party trackers. In addition, Mozilla is also working on blocking cryptomining scripts and trackers that fingerprint users. Some companies and developers believe that it is a good idea to block certain built-in features of the operating system on their sites. Copy and paste is probably one of the better known examples for that. Sites may block you from pasting into password fields, for instance during sign in or sign up to a service. During sign-up, it is probably done to make new users type the password so that they can remember it better and don’t make any mistakes when they paste it. Mozilla plans to integrate a new system add-on called Firefox Monitor in Firefox 62 that Mozilla plans to roll out gradually to the Firefox population. Mozilla ran a Firefox Monitor Shield study recently to find out how useful Firefox users who enrolled in the study found the new feature. Firefox Monitor is a security feature to inform users about data breaches. The service has a web component that Firefox users may enter email addresses to check whether the email is found in compromised databases and to sign up for alerts to receive word when an email address is found on a newly leaked database. Mozilla cooperates with Troy Hunt who maintains the Have I Been Pwned database for the project.
