Starry CEO Chet Kanojia will discuss the future of home networks at TechCrunch Disrupt SF

The post Starry CEO Chet Kanojia will discuss the future of home networks at TechCrunch Disrupt SF appeared first on BardTech . Starry wants to change the way the home internet is delivered. Founded in 2014, the Boston-based startup takes an innovative approach to the space by beaming broadband speed internet through the air, using millimeter waves. The company’s novel technique has drummed up great interest during its four years of existence, offering the potential to circumvent the need to lay down fiber-optics and shake up ISP lockdowns. Investors have certainly been paying attention. In July, the startup raised another $100 million, bringing its total up to $163 million. The company has been piloting its service for a couple of years now, starting in its native Boston and rolling out to a handful of other American metropolitan areas, including testing in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, both of which arrived this year. In January, Starry teamed up with networking manufactur...

Uber’s chief diversity officer is coming to TechCrunch Disrupt 2018

The post Uber’s chief diversity officer is coming to TechCrunch Disrupt 2018 appeared first on BardTech . At TechCrunch Disrupt 2018, Uber’s Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Bo Young Lee will be joining us to talk about the ride-sharing company’s efforts to put detoxify its corporate culture and promote a more inclusive environment for employees. Lee was hired as the company’s first chief diversity and inclusion officer this past January, after leaving insurance company Marsh LLC where she held a similar role. Uber has obviously had its fair share of issues with fostering an inclusive culture, they’ve made some public efforts to showcase that the company was making active efforts to promote internal change and they seem to at least be having a more peaceful 2018 than 2017 — in terms of news surrounding the company’s culture. Nevertheless, there has still been plenty of movement surrounding diversity at the company even after Lee’s hire. Uber has hired a chief diversity off...

Google and AISense will talk voice at Disrupt SF 2018

The post Google and AISense will talk voice at Disrupt SF 2018 appeared first on BardTech . Only a few years ago, talking to your phone or computer felt really weird. These days, thanks to Alexa, the Google Assistant and (for its three users) Cortana and Bixby, it’s becoming the norm. At this year’s Disrupt SF 2018, we’ll sit down with AISense founder and CEO Sam Liang and Google’s Cathy Pearl to discuss the past, present and future of voice — both for interacting with computers but also as a way to help us capture and organize information. It’s probably a fair guess that you’ve heard of Google, and Cathy Pearl has literally written the book on designing voice user interfaces . You’re probably also quite familiar with the Google Assistant. AISense, on the other hand, may not be a household name yet, but its flagship product, Otter.ai , is quickly gaining a following. Otter.ai is a mobile and web app that automatically transcribes phone calls, lectures, interviews and me...

In the past couple of decades, Elon Musk’s efforts with SpaceX have partially kicked off a space race in the VC-funded rocket startup scene. At Disrupt SF 2018, we’re thrilled to host a panel of some of Silicon Valley’s top investors whose firms are eyeing the stars. Rob Coneybeer from Shasta Ventures, Tess Hatch from Bessemer Venture Partners and Matt Ocko from DCVC will all be joining us to discuss their points of view on the commercial space industry and where the major opportunities lie for startups looking to penetrate the market. iRobot CEO Colin Angle will discuss home robotics at TechCrunch Disrupt SF

The post iRobot CEO Colin Angle will discuss home robotics at TechCrunch Disrupt SF appeared first on BardTech . The promise of home robotics has been a persistent one over the decades. After all, who wouldn’t want a Rosie the Robot to help out with chores around the house? In spite of the mutually agreed upon coolness of such an idea, however, the idea has proven elusive — for all but one company. iRobot has given the world the one true mainstream home robot in the form of the Roomba. The robotic vacuum features complex underlying technology to help it perform one of the most mundane domestic tasks. The product has only grown in popularity since launching in 2002. In 2017, it was the best-selling vacuum in the United States. iRobot CEO Colin Angle cofounded the company 28 years ago, alongside fellow roboticist Rodney Brooks and Helen Greiner. In its earliest days, iRobot built everything from moon rovers   to baby dolls, but, as Angle jokes, he found his greatest success as ...

Kairos’ Brian Brackeen to show off facial recognition tech at Disrupt SF

The post Kairos’ Brian Brackeen to show off facial recognition tech at Disrupt SF appeared first on BardTech . Privacy and security continue to be a top-line issue in our world today. This puts facial recognition in a bit of a grey area, as it could offer incredible benefits to our security and open up vulnerabilities when it comes to our privacy. Luckily, Kairos CEO and cofounder Brian Brackeen will be joining us at Disrupt to chat about all this and more. The idea for Kairos came when Brackeen was working on HR time-clocking systems at Apple. People were cheating the system, which spurred Brackeen to implement facial recognition. Long before Apple ever introduced FaceID, Brackeen knew that this type of verification would have big implications on the broader ecosystem. But those implications can be just as negative as they can positive, a fact that Brackeen is keenly aware of. “Facial recognition-powered government surveillance is an extraordinary invasion of the privacy of all ...
