How to help Californians whose tap water is tainted

The post How to help Californians whose tap water is tainted appeared first on BardTech . David Gorn Contributor David Gorn is a contributing writer for CALMatters and formerly was an editor and reporter for public media, including NPR and its California stations. Karen Lewis knows about water problems. The 67-year-old lives in Compton, where the water coming out of her tap is tinged brown by manganese, a metal similar to iron, from old pipes. The water is supplied by the troubled Sativa Los Angeles County Water District. The district has been plagued by administrative scandal and charges of mismanagement, and it hasn’t been able to generate the money needed to fix the brown water. Lewis has sat through innumerable community meetings and heard years’ worth of explanations, and she’s had enough. “Nothing’s been changed,” she said. “They’re not going to change.” Lewis is one of an estimated 360,000 Californians who can’t safely drink the water that flows to their homes. WeTransfer is getting weird…

The post WeTransfer is getting weird… appeared first on BardTech . What do you do if you’re a European startup competing against the likes of Box and Dropbox , and are looking to make a splash in international markets like the U.S.? Well, if you’re the Dutch startup WeTransfer (which raised a cool $25 million about three years ago to take the U.S. market by storm), you get weird. Really, really, avant garde-level weird. WeTransfer, Funky Dutch Cousin Of Dropbox And Box, Gets $25M To Go Large In The U.S. The latest overture to the hipsterati is the company’s three video set collaboration with King Krule (which I applaud for no other reason then it lets me write about King Krule on the site). Here’s the first video from the collaboration between the ( Beyonce -and- Tyler-the-Creator -and- New-Yorker -approved) artist and the file transfer and storage service. On the WePresent “platform” (which, back in my day, we would have called a “web zine”), Krule discusses the pr...

HP is ‘printing’ drugs for the CDC to speed up antibiotic testing

The post HP is ‘printing’ drugs for the CDC to speed up antibiotic testing appeared first on BardTech . At least 2 million people in the U.S. become infected with so-called “super bugs” and at least 23,000 people die as a direct result of these infections each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Now, HP’s Biohacker technology is working with the CDC on a pilot program to “print” and test antibiotics in an effort to catch these antimicrobial resistant strains from spreading faster. The HP D300e Digital Dispenser BioPrinter technology works by using the same set up as a regular ink printer, but instead dispenses any combination of drugs in volumes from picoliters to microliters to be used for research purposes. Part of the reason these bugs spread so rapidly often comes down to mis-use of antibiotics, leading the bacteria to develop a resistance to the drugs available. The CDC hopes to give hospital providers access to the technology nationwide to cut down on ...

Facebook bans Myanmar military accounts for ‘enabling human rights abuses’

The post Facebook bans Myanmar military accounts for ‘enabling human rights abuses’ appeared first on BardTech . Facebook is cracking down on the military leadership in Myanmar, the Southeast Asian country where the social network has been identified as a factor contributing to ethnic tension and violence. The U.S. company said today that it removed accounts belonging to Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, who is commander-in-chief of the armed forces, and the military-owned Myawady television network. In total, the purge has swept up 18 Facebook accounts, 52 Facebook Pages and an Instagram account after the company “found evidence that many of these individuals and organizations committed or enabled serious human rights abuses in the country.” Some 30 million of Myanmar’s 50 million population is estimated to use Facebook, making it a hugely effective broadcast network. But with wide reach comes the potential with misuse, as has been most evident in the U.S. But the...

Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov unveils its answer to Tesla

The post Russian arms manufacturer Kalashnikov unveils its answer to Tesla appeared first on BardTech . The Russian weapons manufacturer Kalahsnikov , best known for making the AK-47 machine gun, has unveiled a fleet of electric and hybrid cars, buggies and motorcycles this week — including an electric vehicle that the company says will rival Tesla. While it’s a noble goal to take competitive aim at the world’s most famous electric vehicle brand, the retro-styled concept car, dubbed the CV-1 , bears a closer resemblance to another, more infamous car from the Soviet era… the Trabant. That’s a vehicle, by the way, whose Fahrvergnügen  is best illustrated by the Conan O’Brien’s demonstration below . The CV-1 is based on the retro-IZH-21252 model known as the “Combi” and is a test bed for Kalashnikov’s electric drive train, which the company said was developed in-house. The Combi has a cruising range of 350 kilometers and can go from 0 to 100 kilometers in roughly 6 seconds, ...
