So far, we’ve seen a lot of great devices at IFA 2018. The Sony Xperia XZ3 , BlackBerry KEY2 LE , ZTE Axon 9 , and Honor Play , to name a few. But Google doesn’t want to be forgotten. The company has announced a big new feature for Google Assistant that makes it possible to understand multiple languages at once.

Google Assistant already supports a bunch of languages. However, you have to manually choose one of the languages and then it will only use that language. This can be a problem if you have people in the same house trying to use Google Home in multiple languages. Now, you can select two languages and Assistant will automatically detect the language you are speaking with and use that to respond.



The languages you can choose include English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, and Japanese. So if one person talks in English, Google Assistant will respond in English. If the second person uses Spanish, Assistant will respond in Spanish. You don’t have to change it every time.

Google also published a blog post to explain how this all works. Basically, they have a new language-identification model that runs when voice is detected. Assistant transcribes your voice into two different languages while trying to understand the command. Once the language has been detected, the second transcription is canceled and all processing power goes to the correct one.

The list of languages is decent right now, but Google hopes to support 30 languages by the end of the year. The bilingual update is rolling out today.
